Hello West Virginia cyclists,
My name is Mark Hagar, and I’m a board member of the Ride of Silence.
The 1st and only Ride of Silence took place on May 2003, in Dallas TX, when endurance cyclist Larry Schwartz was struck and killed by a bus. His close friend Chris Phelan wanted to honor his friend by holding a memorial ride in his honor, and in hopes of making the motoring public aware that we have (in most cases) the same rights on the road as they, and to be aware of us while we are out there.
From that single Ride in 2003, it grew to 270 registered locations in 2006, in 8 countries, across 5 continents. West Virginia was one of 2 states in the USA that didn’t hold a Ride last year, or have one registered. We are hoping that for 2007, all 50 states will be represented.
I would like to ask that the V. W. cyclists to consider organizing a Ride of Silence in your area, on Wed. May 16th 2007, at 7:00 PM, in conjunction with Rides that will take place world wide. (the exception, Rides in the southern hemisphere will be held on Sat. the 19th, at 10:00 AM, for rider safety and greater visibility to the public and media) Please visit the Ride of Silence website for further information about the Ride. http://www.rideofsilence.com
I will provide any support and info that you might need, in order to organize a Ride.
Thanks for considering this, and I hope the V.W. will join us in 2007 to honor our fallen comrades, and in making the road safer for cyclists worldwide.
