Rafting is one of life's special pleasures. Whether your memories are of a lazy day floating in a calm swimming pool or of tumbling on the waves of an ocean, rafting is familiar to nearly everyone. Now, think whitewater rafting. The images change; adrenaline begins to flow. Are you ready for excitement?
In 2000, West Virginia's whitewater rafting industry celebrates 32 years of providing the best whitewater experiences in the East. From spring into fall, thousands of people-young and old-will suit up and step into rafts that will take them for the adventures of their lives. Many are returning - once is not enough for avid whitewater rafters; others, first-time rafters, will soon learn why repeat visitors can't wait to plan their next trips.
In West Virginia more than 25 professional river outfitters give their guests more fun on the river than they could hope for. Many of those outfitters can tell you about rafting from the early days to the present. Most of the state's rafting companies are owned by men and women who came to the area in the late 1960s and early 1970s to raft for fun or guide for the summer-and loved it so much, they never left.
